Some of our hosts are only opening their doors for the first-time next week and there remains an element of uncertainty ahead. It continues to be our aim to deliver a professional event with the prestige it deserves, providing competitors and spectators worldwide with the full experience of superb fishing and warm Irish hospitality. We will return in 2022 when we can deliver to you the first-class angling experience we are all accustomed to. The World Pairs Angling Championships, an elite festival of coarse angling attracting competitors from across Europe, the UK and as far as South Africa, remains committed to the promotion of angling in Ireland.  This Friday 18th of July we reach a milestone with our event. Just 8 weeks away, we see this is a critical point in the timeline for the arrangement of travel and many other factors.
It has always been our aim to professionally deliver the championships with the prestige it deserves, providing competitors and spectators worldwide with the full Irish experience, in a safe format that fulfills enjoyment in participation. Importantly, an event that proceeds with minimised risk to all involved; from local business providers to island boatmen, from landowners to our stewards. As we write, our entrants worldwide are experiencing different levels of this pandemic and the future is still highly uncertain. Ireland has ‘paused’ its roadmap for a return to society and business as they strive to become Covid 19 free. The R rate is higher than anticipated and for example pubs will now not re-open until 10th of August. Northern Ireland is certainly more open for now but has the same aim. The World Angling Pairs does not wish to expose any risk to the path of recovery for our hosts who have continued to welcome us over the years, and it is with regret therefore that we announce our 2020 event will not go ahead. We appreciate that this will be highly disappointing news to all; those keen to partake once again in the superb angling product on offer. We thank you for your patience and our stakeholders, namely DAERA Inland Fisheries, Inland Fisheries Ireland IFI, Waterways Ireland, Leitrim Tourism and Fermanagh & Omagh Council for their support and advice thus far. Meanwhile the World Angling Pairs and DAIWA UK remain committed to the promotion of coarse angling in Ireland and we can confirm that we are determined to be back next year on the 6th of September 2021. As many await news about this year’s World Paris Angling Championship, we are very hopeful that the desire to host the 2020 event will be fulfilled.
A ‘safe format’ proposal has been shared with key stakeholders that ensures the support the local communities and businesses, whilst meeting the obligations and guidelines set out by the respective governments. This will allow for an enjoyable festival for all participants and viewers worldwide. Positive progress along the ‘road maps’ of all governments involved suggest we may be able to travel for leisure soon and with permissions in place, so an announcement by the early part of July is likely. To all who have enquired or have arrangements in place to take part, we thank you for your patience and commitment during this extraordinary time.  A competitive week of angling in the wildest of conditions met the international competitors at the 2019 edition of the World Pairs Angling championships. This unique event, this year challenged by all the elements, showcased the angling skills of the competitors on some of the best natural fishing venues of Europe in this area of North West Ireland. The competition saw an increased number of new faces and up to 30 Germans compete alongside those from Belgium, the Netherlands, Serbia, Luxembourg, the UK and Ireland.  Pairs angling for a win from separate sections daily keeps the match exciting and all eyes were on Thursday’s top three to see if they could hold their positions for the championships. Friday ended with a joint 130.735 kg for Andy Leathers (Browning Hot Rods) and Will Freeman (Preston Innovations) for the prestigious title and the €10,000 prize. Low pressure, with above average wind gusts and periods of heavy and prolonged rain, pushed the fish into shallow water. This gave tougher conditions for the feeder anglers and allowed pole specialists tocompete better than some years, yet still the average weight was in excess of 7 kg per competitor each day. Drawn in the County Leitrim 5 section on the last day, Andy Leathers was on end peg 39, at Church Shore on Lough Garadice, a moody venue that had seen few weights break 10 kg during the week. Will Freeman drew tricky peg 3 on Connolly’s Shore, but with the prospect of managing to top the 10 kg mark. Together, the intrepid duo put 25.700 kg on the scales at the final whistle. This proved enough to hold off the challenge from two pairs of former winners.  A fantastic last day performance by River Wye ace Hadrian Whittle declared him the 2019 DAIWA Cup winner with 67.390 kg. Hadrian takes home the prestigious Daiwa Cup along with £1,000 prize money and a tackle voucher to the value of £1,500. After an incredible display on peg 8 on Connolly’s Shore, to weigh 21.400 kg, Hadrian said ‘I knew I had to get past weeds that were growing out to 8 m. The wind was such that it would destroy a normal long pole, so I telescoped the last section of my Daiwa Air whip through my spare landing net handle. It was a bombproof set up and allowed me to catch for most of the match.’ While others struggled for decent feeder weights, this innovative piece of angling was enough to catapult the Ross-on-Wye star to the top of the leaderboard.  ishing for a total Pairs prize pot of €20,650, the annual competition is played out in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands and the Fermanagh Lakelands region from the Lower Lough Erne through County Cavan to Lough Scur on the Shannon-Erne Waterway in County Leitrim. The five-day competition, which sees anglers fish a different venue every day, continues to renew interest in the natural fishing opportunities in Ireland highlighting the unique and challenging angling in the most scenic of settings. Seen as the billboard for coarse fishing in Ireland, the competition continues to attract new faces to the Irish match scene, with a reported increase in both festival participation and pleasure anglers taking holidays.  Convenience is key for this competition and the smooth running which sees many of the visiting anglers share transport. Volunteers and staff from Inland Fisheries Ireland, IFI, Fermanagh Omagh Council and Ballinamore Angling & Tourism Group enable the organisers to facilitate three draw hubs across the counties bringing the anglers closer to the venue to draw their peg whilst picking up fresh bait supplies. Venues such as Lough Garadice where you can park at your swim are included but this is wild angling and to reach some of the best fishing transportation is required. Inland Fisheries Ireland, IFI and DAERA Inland Fisheries assist with the transportation of equipment where distance is involved, bringing the competitors on boats seeking Island stretches on the mighty Lough Erne. This all brings a real Irish angle to the competition along with some fun on the bank whilst operating within safety guidelines. Running the event across the border is an important feature of the competition for Waterways Ireland, who contribute towards the €10,000 top prize. Fished across the three counties, the competition allows for a full range of accommodation choices for the visiting angler and many extend their stay to practice beforehand or take in another week’s festival fishing. This year the registration took place on the Sunday night at Shortts Heritage Bar in Ballinamore, County Leitrim, with the Grand Presentation held in the Lisgoole Suite at angler’s favourite, the Killyhevlin Hotel & Lodges in Enniskillen. Martin Greene, Commercial Sales Manager DAIWA Sports UK introduced the results and Michael McIntrye, Senior Engineer Waterways Ireland presented the Leitrim Crystal to the winners. There was no change at the top of the pairs today, with two-times winners Cathal Hughes and Philip Jackson still ahead of a reshuffled chasing pack. In the Daiwa Cup, Dean Barlow hit the top from Brackley Lake (Cavan 4), on peg 5. Dean's 18.825kg came on the pole, which after most weights coming to the feeder, will give others pause for thought.  The first day of the World Pairs went off with a good start with some quality fish for the anglers on the Fermanagh sections. Flat calm waters affected the weights on some of the Cavan and fishing venues but there were still plenty of double figure catches.  We visited the Fermanagh 3 sections of Magho and Rock House. The Rock House shore accessed by the Lough Shore Road to Belleek has never seen anglers before and with some pre-baiting prior to the event is fishing well. Magho further along the road where we fish either side of the jetty is actually behind the trout line and not usually accessible to the coarse angler. As anglers are contributing to a survey to support the Lower Lough Erne Management Plan special dispensation has been given for September festivals. This is important to coarse anglers in Ireland as we know the quality of the fishing available on the Lower Lough with venues here providing up to 50kg bags of bream in past years!  The Lakeland & Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championship began on Monday 7th September in Ireland’s North West with anglers from the UK, Germany, Ireland and even Malaysia fishing in pairs for a guaranteed prize fund of €20,650! The registration and draw evening on Sunday 6th was buzzing with anglers keen to know their rotation for the week. The Standing Stone Hotel, Ballinamore, Co. Leitrim excitement, with current and former world champions, national champions and Classic winners among the participants.   Long list of proposed angling venues revealed! The Lakelands and Inland Waterways World Pairs Angling Championships, Ireland’s most prestigious coarse angling event takes place in 3 weeks from 6 September with over 100 entries already registered. The event attracts anglers worldwide to undertake the challenge of catching natural wild fish that are so prolific in Ireland’s Lakelands, with the added difficulty of doing so in partnership.
